The message, “Able to Feel at 11 Weeks,” presents what is for
many a surprising revelation about the capacity of unborn child to
feel. Fetal pain, according to Dr. John Willke, author of Why Can’t
We Love Them Both?, may be experienced by preborn infants as early
as eight weeks.
According to S. Reinis & J. Goldman, coauthors of The Development of the Brain, a work cited by Dr. Willke, “Lip tactile response may be evoked by the end of the 7th week. At 11 weeks, the face and all parts of the upper and lower extremities are sensitive to touch. By 13 1/2 to 14 weeks, the entire body surface, except for the back and the top of the head, are sensitive to pain.”
