(April 30, 2008) The Florida Senate today failed to pass pro-life ultrasound legislation that would have given abortion-minded women the opportunity to see a live ultrasound of their own unborn child. The 20-20 tie vote, which defeats the measure, came with seven Republicans voting against the bill and one Democrat voting for it.
The measure, a version of which had already passed the Florida House, would have extended into the first trimester an already existing requirement for abortion providers to give women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy a chance to see a live ultrasound of their unborn child--and thereby make an informed choice.
Some 95,000 abortions take place annually in Florida. Of those, some 87,000 are done in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
